Take technology to a new level –underground. NORCAT plays an innovation broker role in helping companies bring new and innovative technologies into the mining sector to solve real and complex problems. “It's a unique facility,” said NORCAT CEO Don Duval. “We're the only nonprofit organization globally that has a fully operating mine that provides both start-up ventures and multi-national companies the resources, expertise and equipment to enable them to design and test prototypes. For start-up companies, it is important to have that first reference customer to validate and get feedback on their technology in an operating environment.”The Technology Testing Centre brings provides companies with a world-class innovation and testing centre in a real underground environment to meet the specific needs of the mining industry.
This state-of-the-art facility is a fully referenceable operating mine with nearly 3km of underground drifts located in Onaping, 40 kilometers north of Sudbury. The mine serves as the perfect location for facilitating research, prototype development and testing in an actual underground mining environment without interrupting mine production.
According to Mine Manager Greg Major, NORCAT has made significant investments in improvements to the leading edge testing facility, with upgrades to infrastructure, resources and equipment. This “one-stop shop” centre provides clients with short or mid-term flexible license agreements or longer term residency options including meeting rooms, common areas, Wi-Fi, men and women drys, and storage facilities.
“In a typical underground mining environment, time delays and being great distances from the cage can increase costs and quite often are off-limits to companies wanting to test their new technology”, says Greg, “the layout of the NORCAT Underground Centre is ideal for personnel, equipment and vehicles, being easily accessible via a surface entrance, as opposed to a mine shaft”.
Most importantly, this facility is strongly aligned with NORCAT's culture of innovation, commercialization and support of a vibrant innovation community in Northern Ontario and across Canada. Greg welcomes companies to discover how the mine site's unique infrastructure and services can help facilitate and benefit their projects and day-to-day operations.
There is no facility in Canada that can compare with NORCAT's Underground Centre, which also serves as a centre for training and development, with the flagship program being the Underground Hard Rock Miner Common Core program. NORCAT continues its path forward, developing and providing leading, world-class programs, services, and resources to reduce injuries, save lives, enhance productivity and drive innovation in the workplace and beyond.
